Ethephon

Ethylene release • ripening • pgr

CAS: 16672‑87‑0 IUPAC: (2‑chloroethyl)phosphonic acid Function: ethylene‑releasing PGR Uses: ripening • degreening • flower induction • latex stimulation Transport: corrosive (DG)* Ports: Rotterdam • Antwerp
*DG classification depends on formulation/pack; consult SDS and carrier requirements in your market.
Formulations
Technical • 480 g/L SL • other on request
Active content (SL)
480 g/L ethephon
pH (SL)
≈ 1–2 (acidic)
Density (20 °C)
≈ 1.20 g/mL
Solubility
fully miscible in water
Mode of action: absorbed and decomposes to ethylene within plant tissues, triggering physiological responses associated with ripening and maturation. Always follow locally approved labels and regulatory requirements for PGR use.
Parameter Typical Spec
Assay (ethephon) ≥ 90% ≥ 90%
Moisture ≤ 1.0% ≤ 1.5%
Appearance white/off‑white crystalline conforms
Stability stable under acidic pH
Applications Packaging Storage & Handling
• Ripening/degreening: pineapple, banana (field), citrus degreening (pre‑harvest).
• Flower induction: pineapple; boll opening/defoliation assistance in cotton per local labels.
• Latex stimulation in rubber.*
• SL: 1 L, 5 L, 20 L HDPE; 200 L drums; 1000 L IBC.
• Technical: 25 kg fiber drums/bags with PE liner.
• Corrosive/acidic. Store in HDPE at 5–30 °C, away from metals/alkalis and oxidizers; protect from heat and sunlight.
• Use acid‑resistant pumps/lines; avoid alkaline tank‑mixes (rapid decomposition). Follow PPE on SDS.
Regulatory: PGR use is subject to local pesticide registration and label directions. Buyer must confirm permitted crops, rates, PHI/REI, and MRLs in the destination market.
